A Vignette Transformation Process and Therapeutic Recommendations
The Transformation of Trust as the Essence of the Process
How are the wounds of the inner child, which lives in each Sexual 5, healed? As we know, SAT is a "school of self-awareness and love," a psycho-spiritual path leading to the knowledge of the Self and the release of our triple-loving potential (erotic, compassionate, and admiring). Those who follow this path learn to be and to love, moving from a deficient condition of ontic obscuration and longing for love that generates false love, to an awakened and fulfilled consciousness. Obviously, each person achieves this dual learning in a different way, following a specific path. While the goal is the same, there are many paths to the top of the mountain.
The specific path for the Sexual 5 is the transformation of the neurotic need called trust. When the childhood wound is reopened and healed, trust gives way to a greater and more mysterious dimension of faith.
The sexual subtype, the most emotional of the E5, requires this trust in the relationship. The other person must be a "fairy godmother," or a magical couple from a fairy tale, who gives them total and unconditional love; or an infallible and perfect guide who never makes a mistake. But since the other can never meet the ideal and always disappoints in the end, because they don't pass the test of perfection, this character petty-mindedly withdraws the trust they had given, meaning they continually give and take their trust.
We can say that the Sexual 5 develops the neurotic need for exclusive and autarchic trust, the result of which is staying in the greed of not giving. Having received no guidance from their parents, it is an iconic trust, where, as soon as the other shows they are not a perfect totem, they are dethroned. Thus, they protect themselves from the danger of being betrayed in their healthy expectation to trust and be guided. The effect of this iconoclastic trust is that the sexual being once again remains in the greed of admiring the lack of love and pathological distance.
When they withdraw their trust because the other didn't meet the ideal, the Sexual 5, by renouncing the relationship, turns their trust back to themselves reactively: Not finding the perfect totem, the perfect guide, they delude themselves into believing they can be that guide and self-deceive.
Trust in themselves is something grounded and measured; it has to do with the control of knowledge. The Sexual 5 seems to continually say: "I give you trust if I know, because you show me that you match my ideal model; I take it away when I realize you no longer match this model." Therefore, trust proceeds from an intellectual calculation. That is why it is so weak and unstable.
Faith, on the other hand, goes beyond the control of thought. It represents trust in something greater and more mysterious, from the "small mind," as Zen masters say. Faith allows transcendence to become small and humble, overcoming intellectual arrogance.
Sexual 5s must say: "Even if I don't understand, I have faith that You understand more than I do, and because of that, I trust and surrender. As far as I can go, I will go with my legs and my heart, I will go and surrender to Your will." Giving up the selfish control of wanting to know everything in advance and trusting the unknown requires an act of courage. Faith comes from the heart, not from reason. Only when the heart opens does the true transformation occur.
SAT involves two types of learning: being and loving, which in turn is differentiated into three forms of love (eros, agape, philia). Thus, it assumes a quadruple blossoming. As soon as the Sexual 5 develops these four existential skills, they undergo a quadruple metamorphosis of trust.
When you begin to release erotic love, you leave behind a type of exclusive trust and find a broader faith in life. By nurturing devotional love, you stop seeking an iconoclastic trust and follow faith in guidance. As you soften and open to compassionate love, you abandon self-trust and feel faith in your heart. Finally, you recognize the lived experience of being when discovering the "silent mind," thus abandoning illusory trust to root in what can be called fundamental faith.
This metamorphosis will not be possible without constant self-observation. If the transformation of trust is the essence of the process, self-awareness is its engine. Self-awareness understood not only in a negative sense, i.e., as a clear and critical view of the limiting and destructive aspects of character and its genesis, but also in a positive sense: as a healing knowledge of the healthy resources to be activated, which for a Five are particularly the virtue of detachment and the Sacred Idea of Transparency. In the following paragraphs, we describe the four transformations of trust into faith.
From Exclusive Trust to Faith in Life
Identifying the Neurotic Need for Exclusive Trust
After recognizing himself as a detached miser, the first step toward transformation, its germ, is identifying his subtype, the central neurotic need, expressed for the Sexual 5 through the word trust. This term, as a catalyst, allows you to organize and view all your previous experience from another perspective. The main drive of his life up to that point is clear to him: the search for absolute love and the ideal partner. And it is very clear, above all, that this was a neurotic drive, that is, dictated by lack, not a healthy movement. Now he can no longer deceive himself because he finally has an accurate diagnosis to clearly see his existential suffering and even give it a name.
"When, in SAT, I recognized that I was a Sexual 5 and was told that my crazy idea was to look for an absolute love, one that isn't of this world, I began to distance myself from that madness for the first time, to question it. I realized how much I had wasted my life in search of that chimera, how I had restricted my existence and devalued, excluded, a priori, everything that didn't fit into this unattainable dream." - Piero A.
Focusing entirely on one person, placing all expectations on them to finally be happy, devalues and excludes all others, not considering them extraordinary enough. But also other areas of life: friends, study, work, and spiritual pursuit. For all of this, a true impulse, a real interest, because the Sexual 5 is deeply convinced that, before doing anything else, he needs to find the philosopher's stone, which is romantic love. If recognizing the Enneatype gave him a map, a compass to guide himself, the theoretical
reference with recognizing the subtype gives this E5 a practical action to take. Now, he is ready to let go of the stubborn attachment to the almost supernatural ideal of the perfect partner and experience a real relationship with a flesh-and-blood partner.
From the Ideal Couple to the Real Relationship
Often, the Sexual 5 is left alone in perpetual waiting because it is very difficult to find the perfect partner. Therefore, he might remain without sexual contact, meaning forgoing erotic pleasure. An important step, therefore, is unlocking his sexuality and giving himself permission to explore his erotic potential. For this, a therapeutic body-focused and experimental approach, like Gestalt or theater, is very helpful.
"I didn’t have sex for 10 years. Between the ages of twenty-three and thirty-three, I remained in an ascetic position, under the illusion that my ex-partner, who had left me, would come back to me. I had tried to unlock myself with Jungian analysis, but unsuccessfully. It was with SAT II and the combined practice of spontaneous movements and Gestalt therapy that I finally freed myself. I especially remember a masterful transformative theater session with Antonio Ferrara. He suggested that I undress and identify myself with a bull in heat searching for females to mount. That’s how I finally broke my resistance, freed myself. That same night, I had sex and, from that moment, in the following months, I never again went through an experimental phase in the sexual field that I had allowed. I gave myself permission to give and receive pleasure without feeling guilty for betraying the blind loyalty to the ideal of absolute romantic love." - Piero A.
Free sexual experimentation, another step for the Sexual 5, is learning to be with a partner. Being in a relationship is indeed very challenging because, in an intimate relationship, all the most archaic fears and anxieties of this nature, which have their roots in primary relationships with parents, gradually come to the surface. Obviously, the intimate relationship allows these unconscious contents to surface to be seen, processed, and overcome, which is why it is a stage of sexuality.
A first challenge is choosing the real relationship and abandoning the ideal. After the inaugural phase of falling in love, the Sexual 5 starts to notice all the imperfections of the couple (for example, aesthetic ones, like minor skin blemishes...) as an excuse to distance himself emotionally. This is clearly a defensive maneuver to avoid the threat of getting stuck in the relationship.
The Sexual 5, among the three subtypes, is the one most likely to get lost in fantasies. He has imagined so far that there could be a perfect partner from all points of view, with whom
he shares everything (ideals, interests, perceptions...) without ever incurring the slightest conflict. Now, catapulted into reality, he realizes that differences between him and his flesh-and-blood partner exist, that the perfect symbiosis is not possible, and that it is necessary to accept the other in their differences. To remain in a relationship, you need to know what the most important things you can share with your partner are and abandon the childhood dream of being able to share everything. On a deeper level, the Sexual 5 understands that the fairy godmother ideal is a primitive idealization, that is, a defense mechanism he erected to protect himself from the witch (mother) he introjected during childhood. In other words, he understands that, to avoid a potentially dangerous relationship like the one he had with his mother, he created an unattainable ideal from which he can escape and take refuge, in his imagination, every time the partner reminds him of that unhealthy primary relationship.
After understanding the mechanism, he is ready to remove this projection of the mother (witch) from his partner and also to give up the primitive defensive idealization (the fairy godmother) in order to relate to the real person in front of him. He no longer demands an exclusive, omnipresent relationship but opens himself to other relationships (for example, friendship), in which he can satisfy other needs that were not met in the couple.
A second challenge, closely related to the first, is giving time to overcome the invasive and enveloping anxieties that arise in the intimate relationship as it progresses.
"After six months of relationship, I invited my partner to sleep at my house, in my 'den.' During the night, I had a nightmare in which my partner devoured me. I woke up suddenly, in anguish, to check the situation: I saw that she was sleeping, calm and very innocent. At that moment, I understood that my dream fantasy had nothing to do with reality and that it came from my relationship with my mother." - Piero A.
This significant testimony reveals the core of the neurotic need for exclusive trust, which stems from the fear experienced in childhood of being swallowed, devoured by a manipulative and intrusive mother. Still traumatized by this first relationship, he tries to protect himself with the ideal of all-encompassing love which, in fact, because it is unattainable, keeps him away from relationships.
The person with Sexual 5 needs to recognize their past wound and give themselves the necessary time to develop a new trust with their partner, which includes setting boundaries, expressing anger, and tolerating conflicts, or better yet, experiencing them as an opportunity for growth that encourages him to stay in the relationship and not as an excuse to abandon it.
Understanding the Origin of the Erotic Wound
Give up the fantasy of the decisive lightning bolt, the dazzling magic, and the eternal flash. Renounce the grandiose ideal of the semi-divine couple. Instead, allow yourself time to gently enter into an intimate human relationship, gradually opening your heart in daily life. This is how the Sexual 5 gives himself the opportunity to understand and heal his old relational wound more deeply.
By erotic wound, we understand the frustration of a child's natural needs, ranging from the need for contact and emotional connection, tenderness, sweetness, and pleasure, to the free and spontaneous expression of anger, aggression, and sexual impulses.
In the case of the future sexually active child, the presence of an intrusive and overly insensitive mother, manipulative and engulfing, unable to harmonize emotionally with her needs, determines the defense of isolation: she disconnects from her body; therefore, from feeling her emotions and also the possibility of expressing them. Instead, she takes refuge in thought and fantasy, seeking control of knowledge as a substitute for the maternal contact and care she lacks.
This character often deceives herself by believing that, by anticipating what will happen, she can feel safe and complete.
"During several ayahuasca treatment sessions, I began to realize to what extent my relationship with my mother had determined the construction of my character.
First, I realized that I wasn't capable of admitting my most basic physical needs: hunger, thirst, going to the bathroom... It's not that I didn't perceive them, but I lacked the healthy movement to satisfy them. It's like there was a very strict judge inside me who blames me and prevents me from taking care of my body. This forced me to be strong and stoic, like an ascetic who must be able to renounce everything. I realized that my mother was behind that harsh dog up there. And I felt, with great regret, how mean and distant she had been.
Second, it became clear to me that I had never felt gently cradled by her, that I had never laid down relaxed against her chest. And that, in the absence of that contact, I felt very lonely and isolated, insecure and scared.
So, I began trying to calm myself by doing this myself, cultivating myself somehow: the form I found was through thinking. Since I didn’t feel well in the present maternal embrace, I projected my thoughts into the future, to understand in advance what would happen and thus calm myself. By not trusting the flow, this is how I began to disconnect from the process to control it. I left the river and sat on the bank as a spectator. I think this was the origin of my pathological detachment." - Piero A.
After understanding how he blocked his erotic potential (Freudianly summarized as Eros and aggression), he now has the opportunity to unlock and release it, to reclaim his instinctive strength and vital spontaneity.
The Recovery of the Body and Anger
There are two ways for the Sexual 5 to heal the erotic wound: reconnecting with the body and giving themselves the freedom to express their needs.
To reincarnate into the body, besides the explosive yang path of sports or intense physical activities (martial arts, mountaineering, weightlifting...), there is the soft yin path of physical awareness. Yoga, for example, provides a sense of grounding and contact with the earth, and thus, a presence in the world of emotions. In fact, Sexual 5s learned in childhood to breathe shallowly to anesthetize emotional sensitivity.
Psychedelic therapy and the use of Master Plants can deepen this sensitivity to recover the intermediate link between thought and the body, which is precisely the awareness of feeling. The Sexual 5 presents, like all schizoid types, a split between the mind and the body, as if the body obeys automatically and abruptly to the mental commands and the tyranny of thought, without a true sensory awareness of actions.
"Several times, while drinking Ayahuasca, the Plant showed me how disconnected I was from my body and actions. For example, I thought I had to get up or change positions, and immediately the body made the movement automatically, as if it were a military order from above that had to be obeyed without hesitation. It was like living under a tyrannical regime where the body obeyed mechanically, like a puppet."
"I learned to intersperse a moment of conscious presence between those commands, which seemed almost like electrical impulses to me, and my bodily actions. In that moment of attention, I could listen to myself and feel, for example, if I wanted to change position or not, and most importantly, to feel myself during the entire duration of the movement, even the most microscopic one. And by feeling myself, I felt warmth and kindness, attention and love for myself." — Piero A.
The recovery of feelings can, therefore, be considered an act of love and self-care, that maternal sweetness that was missing in the early years of life. This reconquest, which is internal, is the foundation for embarking on the second path, the path of emotional expression.
Once the Sexual 5 has reestablished contact with their needs and learned to respect them, they can also express them in relationships. As we saw, for this type, the most inhibited
emotion is anger, which nature tells us indicates that my needs have been frustrated, and I have been harmed. Anger is, therefore, an act of love toward oneself, and the inner child finally has the right to claim their needs, to say "no," and to set boundaries against invasions and manipulations.
It can be very effective for the Sexual 5 to work with parental figures, where the cathartic phase of symbolically killing the parents is followed by forgiveness and recovery. Also, the bodywork in which the therapist initially applies pressure to the chest and abdomen to open the breath and put the client into a "holotropic" state of consciousness allows them to bypass mental control and access quickly the emotional level and core wounds. Later, the therapist helps the client to express with the body and voice the emotions that had been blocked, affirming needs that they had even forgotten to have.
"I remember each gestalt bodywork session as a milestone in my instinctive emancipation. In one session, I let out a scream of pain that I had been holding for years. In another, I spit like a dragon a cry of anger toward my father because he used me as a crutch and didn't let me be his child. I remember one in which I broke a stick to rebel against a group’s blackmail and claim my autonomy. There, I dismantled a complacent attitude that I had learned as a child in my relationship with my mother, who suffered with her needs so that I would be the only one to take care of her, not myself." — Piero A.
Recovering the body and emotions, allowing anger, assertively expressing desires and disagreements, not allowing oneself to be invaded, but adopting the ethic of "moving toward the satisfaction of one's own needs," are, therefore, fundamental steps in the Sexual 5’s transformation process. They create a foundation of security and inner strength that enables a decisive leap from neurotic trust to faith in life.
Faith in Vital Energy
After releasing their attachment to the ideal woman and stabilizing in a real, daily intimate relationship, after therapeutically healing the erotic wound and giving voice to the needs of their inner child, the Sexual 5 can now open up to the experience of faith.
A daily practice related to prana, the vital force, will allow them to maintain a high level of energy, including emotional, in addition to cultivating a natural trust in organic self-regulation.
Another modality is the connection with the elements and forces of nature. When they need to step out of the narrow confines of thought, the Sexual 5 likes to regenerate in nature, where they can distinguish the type of energy they need.
One aid for the release of instinct and desire is tantric practices, in which they experience the flow of pleasure beyond effort and feel that they can surrender to a greater force flowing through them. There are many testimonies about the experience of happiness and surrender to a higher power and the vibratory currents in the body through these tantric practices or the ingestion of Ayahuasca. The small self is set aside, and instead, the instinctive wisdom of the body is obeyed. Vomiting is an antidote to containment, as is allowing the tremors to pass through you.
"I felt that every pore of my skin exhaled intrinsic happiness and joy of existence; it was as if I were transparent, with no rigid boundaries between me and others. It was an ecstatic experience that stayed with me even in the following months and taught me to surrender to a higher power." — Piero A.
All these bodily experiences, even if not understood at the moment, end up revealing themselves later full of meaning and part of a greater plan, a deep healing process, thus consolidating the experience of faith. In particular, these works, which are very exhausting and physically challenging, give the Sexual 5 a sense of their strength, allowing them to inhabit the body and experience the joy of being in a group, sharing through music and dance.
Starting from neurotic trust, catalyzed exclusively in an idealized person, faith in vital energy is a good point of arrival — and rebirth — for the Sexual 5 who, by releasing their erotic potential, opens up to a real and non-mental experience, embodied in their body and feelings.
From Iconoclastic Trust to Faith in Leadership
Recognizing the Shadow of Iconoclastic Trust
When the sexual instinct and erotic love tied to it have been healed, other aspects to be worked on become part of the Sexual 5's transformation process.
If the second predominant instinct of the person is social, issues related to recognition and belonging to the group will come to the forefront. Once the Sexual 5 has calmed down and stabilized emotionally in the couple's relationship, the same neurotic patterns they previously suffered from in the intimate sphere may reappear in the relationship with authority. If in the couple relationship we talk about a neurotic need for exclusive trust, here we can talk about iconoclastic trust, that classic Sexual 5 attitude of destroying and dethroning idols.
A first step is to recognize this iconoclastic tendency and focus on the constellation of traits associated with it, ranging from intellectual arrogance to silent rebellion, covert disobedience, disdainful isolation from groups, narcissistic self-aggrandizement, and even messianic temperament.
This last feature represents the most extreme and pathological case, almost bordering on psychosis, that the Sexual 5 can manifest.
"After a psychedelic therapy session, I had a period of great consciousness opening, during which very strong images emerged from the unconscious. The most powerful vision of all was that of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, growing from my stomach, destroying everything and everyone, only to find itself in the most absolute and chilling loneliness of outer space. It was the mirror of my narcissistic inflation, how my impotence gave rise to this omnipotent and monstrous image. I saw the dark side of my character, my thirst for spiritual power, face to face, and the risk I was running: this greedy search for admiration, combined with the inability to feel devotion, would leave me empty-handed, isolated, alienated, and full of anguish."
No matter how grandiose these fantasies elevate the Sexual 5 to the sky, the painful falls that follow are inevitable. When they hit the ground again, the Sexual 5 feels unworthy, the last of the last. To stop oscillating between these two poles — omnipotence and impotence — and begin to build a "healthy self-esteem" based on reality and not mere imagination, one must understand why they developed iconoclastic trust.
Understanding the Origin of Aversion to Love and Admiration
Seeing the shadow is important so that one isn't caught by it and allows a seed of healthy self-confidence and admiring love to sprout in a humbler terrain. But even more important, in the healing process, is understanding the origin, the genealogy of this aspect of neurosis.
Thanks to the therapeutic relationship and, in particular, the relationship with a Master, the Sexual 5 realizes that they are enacting an old story, one of themselves and their father. They realize that their disguised need for recognition and to be seen as a guide (the wise one, the therapist, the guru...) is connected to their inability to recognize their father and be guided by him.
Just as the mother did not provide emotional support, the father, often gentle but weak, did not provide support in terms of rules and boundaries. There was a lack of healthy confrontation, not to mention a healthy conflict. Their sexuality did not have a wall against which it could lean and find its bones; they could not even openly rebel to discover their strength and define their direction.
To orient themselves in the world, the Sexual 5, deep in their childlike soul, seems to have decided to guide themselves, to walk alone, autonomously, and in counter-dependence. This is obviously a defensive move, so they no longer have to suffer depending on a weak and unreliable guide who leaves them alone.
It is a stubborn, angry, and silent decision, made as an act of revenge, as if saying: "Now I will show you how to do this on my own; I don’t need your guidance. You weren’t there, so as long as I can survive, I will manage on my own and won’t need anything anymore."
Although at first they may seem to be seeking a guide, in reality, they reject it and end up destroying it iconoclastically, as they fear reliving the old wound inflicted by their father.
If, therefore, at the root of the lack of admiring love and the inability to let themselves be guided lies the paternal wound, the way out for iconoclastic trust is to forgive the father and abandon the childish pretense of finding the perfect guide. This happens as the Sexual 5 progressively finds themselves, recognizes, and accepts that they are humanly imperfect, basing their value on real self-esteem and no longer on the fantasy of a grandiose self-image. However, this journey is not always gradual and painless; at times, it demands ruptures and much suffering. In other words, it requires a process of death, fragmentation, and rebirth.
Integrating the Shadow: Imitation, Rupture, Originality
This complicated and intricate journey from darkness to light, which allows the Sexual 5s to differentiate themselves, find their identity, and a healthy self-confidence, involves three moments: imitation, rupture, and originality. But we could also say: idealization, in which the shadow is separated from the light, de-idealization, in which the shadow is projected outwards, withdrawn from the projection, and integration of the shadow and the light.
Imitation
The first of these moments, in its initial phase, is experienced positively, with a feeling of great admiration. The Sexual 5, when they encounter a Master, may feel a healthy desire to imitate them, to develop the positive qualities they recognize in them. It is a learning phase that mostly passes through the intellectual channel of study.
"During the early years of the SAT, I studied with great passion all of Claudio Naranjo’s books and attended his lectures. I always took notes in my notebooks, not wanting to miss anything he said, not even a comma. His vision exalted me, and I wanted to make it mine.
When it was time for me to graduate in psychology, I decided to write a thesis on the psychology of the Enneatypes. Once, during an SAT 5, while practicing confession in the group, I said to Claudio with great sincerity: 'I want to become like you.' He appreciated my transparency, recognized me, and even let me be part of the SAT team, assigning me tasks, valuing me, and giving me responsibilities. Everything went well, and I felt with him as if I were on my honeymoon." - Piero A.
It is indeed a sweet honeymoon, in which the Master is idealized and seen only in their luminous and almost divine form. The shadows, that is, the normal human flaws, are divided consciousness.
This moment of enthusiasm, with time, loses its freshness and lightness. Innocent and clean admiration corrupts and starts to get dirty, because it turns into a desire for emulation; healthy imitation becomes unhealthy imitation. The greed that devours all of the master's knowledge begins to reveal its side effects and contraindications.
In fact, the student realizes they depend too much on the teacher. It’s as if they are lost in the Master; they lost their identity. No matter how hard they try, they cannot find their own vision, their independent thinking, which is mere imitation.
And yet, they want to feel free, autonomous, and creative. And what does that do? They start to de-idealize and tear down the Master, as a maneuver to emancipate themselves from them. They begin to project their humanness, that is, they begin to strip away their trust. Thus, a shadow remains over the Master. Now they see them full of flaws "very trapped in this paradox, with one foot inside and one foot outside, between the feeling of suffocation and the feeling of guilt, unable to find a way out of this double game. Exhausted by this ambivalence and their inner conflict, the Sexual 5 may finally reach a breaking point where the individual impulse prevails.
Nietzsche, a Sexual 5, had to break with his teacher Wagner to find himself. It wasn’t a simple separation, but a rupture, a shock. Nietzsche wrote against Wagner because he had to go against himself to define himself, to self-define. He had to tear down the old idols to replace the old tablets with new ones. This seems to be the Sexual 5's path.
There is a warrior, Apollonian phase, in which this character must enter. To break free from symbiosis and find their own voice, they need to commit parricide and stain their hands with blood. Also in Zarathustra, in the famous chapter "The Vision and the Riddle," in which the doctrine of eternal return is stated, the powerful image of the shepherd appears, who, harassed by a black snake, must bite it and cut off its head to survive.
The shepherd then bit as my scream advised him: and he bit well! Far from himself, he spat the snake's head and stood up. He is no longer a shepherd, he is no longer a man, a man
transformed, surrounded by light, who laughs! Never before in the world has a man laughed like him.
Likewise, the Sexual 5, to feel their strength and find themselves, at a certain moment must cut the head off their dragon: their feeling of guilt. They must be willing to pay the price of separation, which is precisely the feeling of guilt. The crucial point for them is to move from the guilt of the child to the responsibility of the adult: to fully assume the pain of separation and the effort of individuation.
This Character
This character, who was used to remaining hidden in the world of fantasy, now finally reveals himself, becomes transparent, and enters the real world in a real relationship, in which he can break through that shell of iconoclastic trust. When the Sexual 5 begins to reveal itself and stops hiding, it gives itself the opportunity to finally be exposed.
For the Sexual 5, the hard and transparent confrontation seems to be a necessary passage, even if it involves a rupture. It is a restorative and corrective experience for what was missing in the original relationship with the father. In order to renounce childish omnipotence and teenage arrogance and become an adult, this crouched rebel, the sexual Is, must openly collide with the paternal authority, in order to feel the consistency of its limits and be able to identify on a real level.
Originality
If the confrontation and rupture are a warrior and Apollonian moment, what follows is more Dionysian: chaotic but fertile. After the rupture, the fragments scatter. One must go through a process of death before being reborn and recomposing.
Transparency allows the Sexual 5 to be honest with itself and recognize if it is still seeking the totem of knowledge to build a grand image of itself or if it is already in search of wisdom for its true psycho-spiritual growth. It allows you to quickly see if it is motivated by genuinely altruistic or narcissistic motives; if, instead of being driven by a true desire to be helpful to others, it falls into the temptation of assuming a new mask to receive admiration.
Detachment works in synergy with transparency and enables the effective renunciation of accumulating knowledge. The Sexual 5 increasingly renounces the idea that it needs to know everything to act in the world. But this would not be possible if, at the same time, it had not developed a healthy trust in its body and emotions. It no longer relies solely on
thinking, but on instinct and empathy. This implies an act of humility, a return to the humus, to the Earth.
Self-Confidence
More self-confident, the Sexual 5 begins to identify. It finds its task, its role in the world. After putting aside its destructive iconoclastic tendency, it enters a constructive and concrete phase that requires a lot of commitment.
When identified, the Sexual 5 also begins to experience the beauty and pleasure of being in a group. Now that it has acquired its own voice, it feels less fragile, no longer afraid of being swallowed or absorbed because it has limits, an identity, and knows itself and its specificity. It is even capable of collaborating, of putting its skills into action. Living healthy power.
Creativity and Artistic Inclination
Being the most creative and artistically inclined subtype among the misers, the Sexual 5 finds its originality later in the individuation process. And it does so in the strongest and most radical sense of the term, finding the origin of its creativity, the source of its inspiration. Or perhaps it is better to say: it receives.
Now that it is no longer obsessed with the idea of receiving, now that it is less greedy and more confident, now that it has rid itself of the "teat" of the Masters, that it has opened its mouth and hands, it is finally ready to receive. Finally, it recovers the masters it needed to dethrone in order to identify itself. Now that it no longer needs to imitate them because it has found its originality, it can feel gratitude and, for the first time, truly begin to trust. It is the moment when iconoclastic trust transforms into faith in the guide.
Obedience, Inspiration, and Faith in Leadership
Faith in guidance involves many aspects: respect, obedience, inspiration, gratitude, offering, invocation, devotion. When the Sexual 5, having renounced the childish narcissistic need to admire love and having identified itself, begins to respect, admire, and love a master outside of itself, it can finally find the inner Master. In fact, the distinction between the internal and the external disappears.
When faith in the guide replaces the neurotic need for iconoclastic trust, the emergence of devotional love naturally brings with it a sense of belonging to a community (whether
spiritual or not) and a desire to serve. Devotional love, by actively participating, leaves the petty, isolated, and distant position to open to a broader dimension of reciprocity. It is evident that faith in the leader gives rise to feelings of gratitude and appreciation.
Self-Sufficiency and Isolation
If faith in guidance implies humility and becoming small, love for the great, compassion implies sensitivity and love for the small. This may be the most difficult step for the Sexual 5 person.
Due to its hypersensitive nature, during childhood it had to harden and desensitize, pathological detachment from emotions to protect itself, as we have pointed out above. Therefore, an important step for the Sexual 5 on the transformation path is precisely recognizing this pathological isolation and illuminating this illusion of separation.
Important life events, such as loss, grief, or illness, can also help the Sexual 5 break the shell of isolation. These events allow one to make contact with pain and thus soften the heart. Now that it is beginning to open up, it is more willing to receive from the outside. That is, it is ready to begin activating the first of the three great currents of compassionate love as described in Buddhism: receiving compassion, giving compassion, and giving compassion to others.
Open to Grace
The experience of illness seems to be particularly transformative for the Sexual 5. It allows it to discover that it can be cared for and accepted even when it feels weak, worthless, and powerless.
"Being upset because I couldn’t move, couldn’t go out, couldn’t do what I wanted when I wanted and, at the same time, being happy for realizing how much they love me. How many cared for me, took care of me, and prayed for me! How could I let discomfort take over my day with such a great and blessed gift as the love I received? How important it was to feel useless, powerless, incapable, and yet be cared for." - Mara G.
Illness offers the opportunity to learn to step out of self-sufficiency, to relinquish control, and to ask for help:
"The most therapeutic thing I did recently was a hip replacement. I spent six months without putting weight on my right leg, for a month I couldn’t get dressed, they gave me
prepared food, I couldn’t do my nails, wash my feet, put on a sock. How difficult it was to learn to ask and to be attended to! How hard it was to know what I wanted in order to ask! How important it was to let people deal with my things their way, not mine! Losing control of everything!" - Maria Luiza F.
The Sexual 5 that opens to pain also opens to receive the grace of care, which carries the gratuity of the unexpected gift:
"Once I dreamed I fell into a frozen creek. At the end of the descent, my face was completely covered with branches and pieces of ice. My wife was waiting for me on the shore and began gently stroking my face. With every touch, the ice melted and my skin returned to light. Perhaps for the first time in my life I felt I was truly receiving because something in me had opened."
Thanks to this emotional thaw, the Sexual 5 matures in the awareness that the opening to grace is a fundamental step on the path to fullness; it learns to trust that love exists in the universe, as long as it abandons its autarchic illusion and opens up to receive it.
The only thing the effort needs is to stop trying and relax, because this generates tension and closure, while the relaxation that trust brings opens.
Feel Compassion for Yourself and Forgive Yourself
Breaking down the wall of indifference toward one's own needs and opening oneself to receive are clearly the prelude to being more attentive and present to the needs of others in a spontaneous and sincere way, not forced, induced by oneself to compensate for guilt due to selfishness. But before reaching this sense of connection with others, the Sexual 5 needs to activate compassionate love for themselves. A quality awakened through the remembrance of one's own heart and the process of self-forgiveness.
As the feeling of isolation begins to dissolve, the Sexual 5 understands that, in order to reconnect with themselves and experience loving feelings, it is very important to feel their own heart. The heart chakra, located in the center of our being, is the most closed and dormant part of the E5. To awaken it, one must pay attention to it, take care of it, and remember it: "During an Ayahuasca ceremony, I started placing my hands over the tensions in my heart. It was a time when sometimes I felt pain in the area of my chest, I think because of the worries and feelings I was living with. I needed to take better care of myself and my heart, so I started gently caressing it. I visualized the heart as a nest, and inside it, a newborn baby. This baby was me. I was moved and felt immense tenderness for that little creature." – Piero A.
A greater sensitivity to oneself paves the way for forgiveness. If forgiving parental figures is exhausting and difficult, forgiving oneself is even more so. This happens through acceptance: The Sexual 5 must, through the virtue of detachment, rid themselves of mandates, impulses, duties, and, in general, all the contents of the superego that come from their higher self, i.e., their inner judge.
This jailer, this internal tyrant, behaves like a slave, telling you: "If you don't reach the ideal I've set for you, you're worthless. You need to reach it, on time and in the way I've set."
By frantically pursuing these grand ideals and obeying these mandates, the Sexual 5 disconnects from the feelings of the heart, becoming harmful to themselves and others.
The experience of forgiveness goes through a moment of deep repentance, in which one recognizes the inevitability and necessity of sin. If we didn’t sin, we wouldn't be able to feel the damage we've caused to ourselves and others. Nor, therefore, the desire for redemption (said in Eastern terms: cleaning our karma, i.e., the modification of our negative actions and behaviors).
In this process of forgiveness, music (especially classical music) provides valuable help, as it speaks directly to the heart and emotions. "During a very deep work, I had a death experience. I saw my own funeral. As I looked at my body in the coffin, I was completely entranced by the music. It was touching and sweet music, maternal and compassionate. The sounds of the violin brought me messages from another dimension. I don't know how this happened, but the music, while still music, was also a verb, a voice, a feminine voice. And one word, above all, resonated in my soul: forgiveness. With tears in my eyes, I felt immense contrition, a deep regret for the harm I had done to myself. Meanwhile, I looked at my body and felt that I could forgive, let go of that old self from the past, that part of me that was so hard and inflexible for having to live according to unattainable ideals. Saying goodbye to it, I didn't feel disdain for that part, but love and gratitude. After this experience, little by little, I became kinder to myself. I learned to be more generous with my inner child; instead of following the grand, yet neurotic, needs of my ideal self, I started to listen to the small, yet healthy, needs of my inner child." – Piero A.
Thanks to the recovery of the heart and the forgiveness of parental figures and oneself, the Sexual 5 undergoes a great transformation: they finally realize that they have a loving mother within them. "And now I know that taking care of myself is important for love of myself and love for all who helped me in this process. I recovered the recognition of my inner mother. It is a feeling of 'I have a mother' that didn't exist before."
Faith in the Heart
All these stages (breaking the illusion of isolation, opening up to receive, connecting with the heart, forgiving one another) lead to a progressive expansion of the potential for love and the development of faith in the heart, replacing the neurotic need to be self-sufficient in autarkic trust. This is the moment when the Sexual 5 also begins to open up to compassion for others.
By faith in the heart, we basically mean two things: a return to the heart and joy in generosity.
First, faith in the heart implies the certainty, beyond any doubt, that one can return to the heart at any time. The Sexual 5, like the other two subtypes, lives more in the mind and deceives themselves, waiting for the answers they seek in thought. When they recognize the limits of thinking and their compulsion to understand everything, they access the dimension of the heart, where they know they can seek refuge again.
Second, faith in the heart leads the Sexual 5 to overcome their fear of giving and their tendency to hold back, to discover the joy of generosity. No matter how exhausting it is, the practice of generosity, if trained, has a huge healing effect and is a powerful antidote to greed.
When they open up to receive, the Sexual 5s finally understand the importance of giving too. They intuit the universal law of reciprocity: you receive what you give, and when you give, you receive. In fact, giving is not a loss but a gain because it immediately generates a feeling of free happiness and, furthermore, is followed, sooner or later, by a response from the universe.
The Sexual 5 feels an increasingly burning desire to live as much time as possible with an open heart because they feel that when they close it, life becomes gray and meaningless. Discovering wisdom without compassion is barren and insufficient. They also realize that the heart is immensely more powerful than reason and that the fear of not succeeding is just another face of greed, because it comes from not giving oneself completely, blocking the flow of generosity.
From Illusory Trust to Fundamental Faith
Although the three aspects discussed so far relate to unlocking the potential for love, this fourth facet of the transformation from trust to faith mainly deals with the aspect of knowledge.
"Thanks to the study of Buddhism and the practice of meditation on the absence of a self, whenever I felt suffering, I learned to ask myself: 'What idea of myself am I holding on to? And what idea of myself am I rejecting?' Thus, I came to the conclusion that all these ideas are nothing but useless fantasies, because they refer to a phantom self that is evanescent, insubstantial, non-existent. And when I managed to rid myself of them, I always felt a great release." – Piero A.
To free oneself from masks and let go of illusions about oneself, the Sexual 5 needs to deepen their self-knowledge in a positive sense and recognize the authentic experience of Being. It is this experience that will lead them to abandon illusory trust and find fundamental faith.
Positive Self-Knowledge and Fundamental Faith
Fundamental faith is the state of consciousness that arises from the experience of existing, of feeling fully and unequivocally present, of being. It is the unshakable certainty that comes from the direct and concrete knowledge of Being. It is a non-intellectual knowledge: it is the intuitive and immediate awareness of being present.
The Role of Faith
That’s why we talk about "faith," because being and feeling present can be experienced but not explained. The experience of being goes beyond conceptual limits. Reason must step back and accept the mystery.
And we speak of "fundamental" because the experience of Being, irreducible and unobjectifiable to "something," is, however, the foundation of all things, that is, of all phenomena of which we can be conscious. The true path to achieving this experience is that of contemplative practice. The spiritually oriented person usually seeks teachers who can guide them and introduce them to this knowledge.
Therefore, fundamental faith can be understood as that refuge that is not in the intrinsic experience of being. Internal faith, therefore, and external certainty. We can see that moving from illusory trust to fundamental faith has profoundly healing effects.
In fact, if the first effect is feeling at home, the second is freeing oneself from the effort of looking outward:
"Through the lived experience in practice, I had the feeling of finally coming home, where I felt fulfilled; I no longer needed to search for anything outside of home. As Claudio wrote to me in a dedication, he had tasted 'the great peace, in the recognition of what is so sought and never lost.' What I always sought was there waiting for me; I never lost it! The Being. It was I who was absent, chasing only shadows and illusions..." - Piero A.
It is understandable the importance this holds for a person. It is sexual to feel that not all nourishment comes from the outside, but that within them there is an inexhaustible internal source that can fill and nurture them, always.
The Acquisitions of the Self Experience
A third important achievement that arises from the experience of the Self is the acquisition of a new way of seeing, that is, from a point of view external to the ego and its mechanisms, allowing for disidentification and detachment. Once the Sexual 5 has encountered the psychology of the Enneatypes and identified with them, rooting oneself in conscious presence allows them to look with love at the role-playing game of characters without identifying with it.
Rooting oneself in Being, therefore, implies the possibility of practicing the virtue of E5s, detachment, which is the antidote to the passion of greed. When the sexual Being knows it is sexual, it can let go of the things it was clinging to.
Although all the benefits of meditation seen so far (feeling at home, relaxing tension, detachment) are universal, meaning they affect all characters, some more specific ones are particularly evolutionary for the five sexuals. At a later stage of the transformation process, mindfulness expands: from personal, it becomes transpersonal. This subtype, being, like the other two, dominated by the fixation of pathological detachment, tends to experience the presence of meditative consciousness as strictly personal, separate, and distinct from others. On a deep level, there is a form of possessiveness that considers presence as "mine," as if it were an object, a treasure to be zealously guarded, as a new protection against the threat of losing the safe distance in relationships.
When meditating alone, the Sexual 5 cannot see this possessive aspect of the self. They only notice it when participating in a collective spiritual practice. It is in the group that they can recognize and, thus, overcome this possession:
"During a practice where I intended to better understand mindfulness, I realized that the more I tried to be present and the more I tried to understand what my presence was, the more distant and separate from the group I felt. All the others were singing and dancing, but I was not participating, I didn’t feel part of it. Then I positioned myself as an external observer and felt my presence very cold, arid, and aseptic. I suffered from this isolation but didn’t know how to get out of it.
Until finally, I let myself be carried away by the rhythm of the dance and the sweetness of the music. It was at this moment that I understood that only if I forgot 'my' separate presence, if I forgot myself, only if I fused and dissolved into the harmony of the music, my voice in unison with the group’s, would I feel better." - Piero A.
This passage from personal and still isolated presence to shared and transpersonal presence, therefore, helps dismantle pathological distancing and the illusion of being separate, and prevents the arrogance of believing oneself superior and building a spiritual ego.
Peak Experiences and the Dissolution of Dualism
Finally, if one perseveres in meditative practice, intensifying it even through retreats, the Sexual 5 can access "peak experiences" that have a deeply healing effect and can dissolve even further, at least temporarily, their dualistic illusion of a separate and detached self. These are experiences that go beyond language and, therefore, cannot be described, but are worth mentioning to indicate their effect on the transformation process.
Sometimes, the contemplative state is so deep that the separation between the inside and the outside disappears completely: "Inside" and "outside," "I" and "you," "near" and "far," "here" and "there," even "before" and "after" end up being only mental labels, with which conceptual thinking tries to capture the world and fix the flow of life. These are just illusory boundaries that lead to a dualistic view. Just as aversion to neurosis arose through negative self-knowledge of the character, here emerges an aversion to thinking and language. A true nausea for knowledge arises, a great weariness of the mind's "doing," accompanied by immense respect for the sacred not-knowing.
In this dissolution of thought and boundaries, all phenomena appear, beyond their names, as radiation, as the pulsation of Being. The eagle flying in the sky is no longer a bird in the air, but the eagle of the sky. It is inseparable from space; it is its natural expression. And everything, in this open and transparent space, is welcome. Everything is received with equanimity. Pleasure and pain are the same: everything becomes pleasure. Faith in being, then, becomes faith in becoming, because Being and Becoming are one. Apollo and
Dionysus finally meet. These are just moments, moments of grace, but they heal the deepest wound of the Sexual 5: the wound of believing that one is a separate self, the wound of trust.
Therapeutic Recommendations and Final Observations
Spontaneous movement, therapeutic theater, and psychotherapy (particularly Gestalt combined with expressive body work and holotropic breathwork) allow the erotic potential to be released, anger to be expressed, boundaries to be learned, and relationships to be healed.
Living in a relationship is very transformative because it pulls the Sexual 5 away from fantasy and roots them in reality. A physical discipline (such as yoga or spending time in nature) restores the energy and vitality that you tend to lose when you get too stuck in fantasy. The relationship with guiding figures: therapists and teachers, allows this character to identify their iconoclastic position to overcome it and make peace with their parents, forgive them, and let them go, taking responsibility for their own life in an adult way and finding their own originality. Psychedelic therapy deepens the therapeutic process and reveals the deepest and darkest aspects of character. Drinking Ayahuasca is, along with meditation, a powerful factor of transformation because it opens the heart and teaches the Sexual 5 to let go of control and trust in a higher force. The practice of meditation gives them the fundamental foundation: the experience of being present, which allows them to let go of many attachments and dissolve their dualistic view of a separate and detached self. The painful facts of life, especially loss and illness, help this character break away from the crazy idea of isolation and open up. The Sacred Idea of Transparency finally gives the Sexual 5 the ability to reveal itself and gives them the feeling of being open, receptive, and connected with the universe and its earthly and celestial gifts. At this level, the Sexual 5s can set aside their neurotic need for trust and have faith in life, in inner guidance, and in love.
