Love
In adolescence, the first experiences of love for the Sexual 9 are almost exclusively platonic. These are characterized by deep infatuations with individuals to whom their love is never confessed. The feelings are sustained entirely by fantasies. The very idea that the object of their affection might become aware of their emotions or the secret fantasies they harbor about them creates intense shame and discomfort.
A rich, imaginary world develops, filled with romantic daydreams about an idealized first meeting, often set in picturesque locations like by the sea at sunset or in a cozy mountain cabin by the fire. The Sexual 9 imagines dialogues, rehearsing scenarios to prepare for the remote possibility that one day this person might actually speak to them.
This fanciful and timid detachment from reality can lead the Sexual 9 to miss real signs of interest from the person they are infatuated with. They may remain lost in their fantasies, unaware that the attraction they long for could be unfolding in real life. For the Sexual 9, taking the initiative in courtship feels unthinkable. They generally wait for others to show interest, preferring this approach to avoid the pain and shame of rejection.
The love and attention that a Sexual 9 receives are so scarce that even a small gesture can kindle the hope of finding an endless source to quench their emotional thirst. Sadly, after investing significant time and energy, they often realize that this "fountain" was a mirage—an illusion in the desert.
“For me, losing my relationship, my partner, and everything we had built was like dying. The despair was so deep that I even found the strength to fight hard, to the point of physical confrontation. When I finally had to accept that there was nothing left to do, I felt like my world had collapsed. Everything I had built—love, work, friends—had turned to ashes.” (Dania)
Although these loves are platonic, they can be all-consuming. The Sexual 9 becomes entirely devoted, unable to focus on anything else. If someone else explicitly courts them during this time, they remain loyal to their platonic fantasy, unwilling to trade the dream of an ideal love for a real-life experience.
“Because I was always with him, I stopped seeing my friends. Without realizing it, I began isolating myself. My partner became my whole world and my entire life. I went from living for my family to living for my partner.” (Dania)
Sexual 9s often find what they believe to be "the love of their life" in their youth or, at the very least, a partner they remain with for many years. Their love is profound but often resembles the unconditional love a mother feels for her child. According to Claudio Naranjo's theory of love, E9 is most inclined toward compassionate love. Among the three subtypes, the Sexual 9 develops erotic love more than the others, but this passion fades quickly, giving way to an "unconditional" love for which they would sacrifice everything.
All of their energy—physical, emotional, and financial—is dedicated to meeting the needs and desires of their partner. They live entirely for the other person, losing touch with their own identity. Their unconscious motivation is the hope of being valued and loved unconditionally for simply existing, as though seeking the present and affirming father figure they may have lacked in childhood.
Unfortunately, their relationships often mirror the inadequacies they experienced with their fathers, particularly when the Sexual 9 is a woman. Partners can make them feel perpetually insufficient. Yet, despite the pain and frustration, they continuously invest energy in trying to meet their partner's expectations. The Sexual 9 demonstrates an extraordinary capacity to transform "dry crumbs" into what feels like "freshly baked bread," enduring unfulfilling, one-sided relationships for far too long.
“I tolerated abuse and disrespect, allowing myself to be treated as someone else's property. I even reached a point of crisis and sought therapy. The therapist’s first words to me were: ‘You are like a rib of theirs; you need to reclaim your life.’ I started crying but didn’t fully understand what she meant. I realized that, when introducing myself to new people, I wouldn’t identify myself as an individual. Instead, I would say: ‘Nice to meet you, I’m so-and-so’s partner.’” (Dania)
This self-effacing attitude extends into the sexual sphere. Their focus is entirely on pleasing their partner, often neglecting their own desires or needs.
“Sexually, everything seemed to work well—mainly because I avoided feeling desire myself. I only responded to their requests, but nothing originated from me. After years of suppressing my feelings, my body and soul became so anesthetized that I couldn’t feel anything. Experiencing physical sensations reminded me of my existence, which was almost unbearable because it
exposed me to suffering and danger.” (Dania)
For the Sexual 9, the pleasure of their partner is their only source of joy and satisfaction. If there is no time for their own pleasure, it doesn’t matter; their own needs are secondary. A lack of self-esteem and discomfort with their body often reinforces this dynamic. Many Sexual 9s feel ashamed of their physical appearance, considering themselves unattractive and unworthy of desire.
